April Favourites

Written by:

Another month has flown by and I can’t believing it’s the 1st of May as I write this post! April seems to have flown by this month as we have all been enjoying some much needed normality as outdoor hospitality, hairdressers and retail has re-opened again.

I have been very busy this month, as I have been settling into my new job and routine. Don’t get me wrong, I am very pleased to be working in an office environment and I feel fortunate to be able to leave my home every morning and socialise with other people, but the slightly longer working hours are starting to catch up on me now. I’ve been feeling very tired recently and have been losing the motivation to do things other than work, eat, sleep and walk the puppy. Because of this, I’ve had to think a bit harder to produce a list of favourite things that I’ve enjoyed this month but without further ado, here we are:

  1. Camel High-waisted trousers- After living in joggers and leggings for the last year, I have never been so excited to get dressed and wear proper outfits every day now I’m not working from home any more. My new role in the office requires a dress code which I’ve never had before (most of my jobs have been in retail or hospitality, where it has been a very casual dress code or a uniform) and I have needed a shopping trip to buy new clothes. My wardrobe normally consists of casual jeans, joggers or skirts that I find uncomfortable when sitting down all day. While browsing in the sale section of New Look, I found a couple of high-waisted trousers that I absolutely love. They’re stylish, professional-looking and very comfortable. I bought two pairs, one in camel and the other in a dark green shade, but the camel ones are by far my favourite. I feel very sophisticated but cool at the same time. They make me feel like the most professional version of myself as I leave the house at 8am.

2. Revolution Orange Chocolate Palette- Since I have a lot more places to go now that lockdown restrictions are easing, I’ve also been more to put on make-up more often. Most of my make-up gets rubbed off onto my mask these days, but I do like to apply a bit of eyeshadow. I treated myself to the Revolution orange chocolate palette last year, just before the pandemic, and I’ve only just started using it now. I’ve been a fan of Make-Up Revolution products for a while now as they’re both very affordable and cruelty free. The chocolate orange palette comes in a range of warm colours that are great for creating strong but subtle looks.

3. Galaxy Orange Chocolate- On a very similar subject, one of my favourite snacks that I’ve tried recently is Galaxy’s new orange flavoured chocolate bar. I love chocolate orange in any form and Galaxy’s latest flavour is luxuriously creamy. It tastes very similar to Terry’s chocolate orange, which is never a bad thing in my opinion

4. Girl Boss– I’ve had this Netflix Originals series from 2017 saved on my to-watch list for ages, and I finally got round to watching it this week. It’s based on the memoir of Sophia Amorusa (who is the founder of the multi-million pound online clothing clothing Nasty Gal) and tells the story of how she started her business in San Francisco in the early 2000s after selling a vintage leather jacket online for a much higher price than what she bought it for. It’s a very light-hearted comedy drama and, although it was only released four years ago, it does seem very dated as Nasty Gal has since filed for bankruptcy and has been bought out by fast-fashion giant Boohoo (which made headlines last year for paying factory workers less than minimum wage, which doesn’t align with Girl Boss‘ female empowerment values). It also doesn’t have much diversity, and the narrative seems to try a bit too hard to portray Sophia as a likeable protagonist, despite her many flaws, simply because she is a slim, conventionally attractive white girl with a cool aesthetic. However I did enjoy watching the short episodes just before going to bed and I think the show is worth watching purely for the indie soundtrack and the killer outfits, which show off the best of noughties culture.
